Mayumi Hara Dao Architect, LLC was established in 2017 by third-generation architect Mayumi Dao, whose deep-rooted family history in architecture significantly influences her approach. With over 15 years of experience, Mayumi’s work spans a variety of projects, from large institutional facilities like the University of Hawaii’s West Oahu campus to small-scale commercial and residential renovations. As a sole practitioner, she manages all aspects of her firm, focusing on small commercial projects and single-family residential designs, including ʻohana units, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and residential renovations.
Mayumi’s passion for architecture is intertwined with her upbringing in a family deeply engaged in Hawaii’s architectural landscape. Her grandfather was a successful businessman involved in numerous private projects, while her father contributed to local cultural landmarks such as the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. After earning degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University, Mayumi gained professional experience in New York City and San Francisco before returning to Honolulu in 2007. Establishing her own practice has allowed her to honor her family’s legacy while bringing her unique vision to life, emphasizing sustainable design and the preservation of Hawaii’s historic properties.
Despite her extensive architectural expertise, Mayumi found the financial aspects of running a business particularly challenging. As a sole practitioner, she had difficulty navigating cash flow issues, especially in an industry that is heavily reliant on the timing of permits and approvals. The delays associated with these processes created unpredictable income streams, making it hard for Mayumi to plan for growth or sustain operations during slow periods.
Seeking support, Mayumi enrolled in the YWahine in Business Accelerator. The program, led by instructor Mariko Gordon, provided her with essential tools to better understand and manage her finances. Through the course, Mayumi learned to read and analyze financial statements and use them as a foundation for making informed business decisions. This newfound financial acumen allowed her to identify opportunities to diversify her income streams and explore flexible business models, such as collaborating with other architects. These strategies have helped Mayumi address cash flow challenges and position her firm for sustainable growth.
Reflecting on her experience, Mayumi shared, “I really appreciated learning how to better understand and read financial reports. It gave me new tools and strategies for improving my business, and I now feel more confident in assessing where I am and making decisions for growth. The seminar helped me see different income streams and be flexible about how I define a client—whether that’s a homeowner or even another architect. I also liked having the other women in the seminar. Hearing how they handle their businesses was insightful and gave me ideas for my own.”
Through YWCA Oʻahu’s support, Mayumi has gained a more comprehensive view of her business. She is also involved in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Hawaii Chapter, where she previously served on the executive board, further establishing her presence and leadership within the architectural community.
With a stronger foundation in business management and a clear vision for the future, Mayumi Hara Dao Architect, LLC continues to thrive. Mayumi looks forward to expanding her firm’s services and collaborating on projects that contribute to the sustainability and resilience of Hawaii’s built environment.
